What is gel manicure:

Gel manicure is a nail lacquer which is applied on nails and set by using Ultra Violet light to harden and stick it to nails. This is a rather long term nail art which lasts from 10 days to 3 weeks. Gel manicure can be removed at a salon and also at home, but it needs a little practice and patience.

DIY Ways to Remove the Gel Manicure:

For removing gel manicure at home, you must first set a place which is away from linen, furniture and other household stuff for the products you would be using may ruin them. Some of the ways for removing gel nail polish are:

This acetone soaking method is a little time consuming one but it gives good results and does not damage the nail bed also if proceeded strategically.
  • Take two bowls, one big and other small
  • Fill in the larger bowl with warm to hot water
  • Now put the smaller one inside so that it stays intact amid the warm water
  • Now pour some acetone into the small bowl
  • Acetone must be kept here to get warm, as we can not heat it for it is highly inflammable.
  • Meanwhile, buff the surface of your gel manicure with a filer
  • Now put the fingers in acetone solution for 15 minutes
  • The gel would start soaking in the warm acetone
  • Within 15 minutes the corners of nails start coming out
  • Now use an orange wood stick to slightly loosen the gel manicure and work towards pulling it off slowly
  • Now after the gel manicure is removed apply hand cream and cuticle oil to nourish your nails

Foil method may get abrasive so it must be proceeded with utmost caution. You would need a little time at hand to proceed with this method for removing gel manicure:
  • Soak some cotton balls in acetone
  • Take an aluminum foil from kitchen
  • Now buff the surface of your nail manicure with a filer so that the shine loosens up
  • Now place the cotton ball soaked in acetone over the nails.
  • Now wrap each finger covered with acetone soaked balls, with a small piece of foil
  • Keep it on for 15 to 20 minutes and see the gel manicure begins to fall off
  • Be careful that the foil does not damage your nail bed
  • Use an orangewood stick to remove leftover gel on your nails

3- Using hot water and dish soap as gel nail polish remover:

For those who do not wish to use acetone for removing gel nail polish, we have another DIY way to remove gel manicure. This may not be a very easy step but it does give decent results
  • Take some hot water in a big bowl
  • Add dish soap in it and soak your fingers
  • Keep the hands soaked in for around half an hour and you would see corners coming off
  • Now use an orange wood stick to chip the entire gel layer off
  • Do not file until it all gets off as you may damage your natural nail in doing so

4- Using Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda:

This method may not be the most effective one but it does help in clearing the leftover bits after any of the above method. Use warm water for this method
  • Take a big bowl and put some warm water in it
  • Now put apple cider vinegar and baking soda in it
  • Soak your nails in this for around 30 minutes
  • Now use an orange wood stick to scrap off all the leftover gel manicure from your nails
  • Do not use a filer as it may damage cuticles and nail bed

5- Use petroleum jelly to cause a divide between gel and nail bed:

Just apply some petroleum jelly on your nails and then use orange wood stick along with tweezers to pull off the gel manicure. Do not take the cuticles off, be very careful. You may also apply warm towel after putting petroleum jelly on your nails to take them off quickly

While gel manicure may look the most stunning of all nail arts, but there are a few details which you must know about gel manicure before getting them done at a salon:
  1. Gel manicure are not the acrylic ones as gel ones come as nail polish which are applied on nails and hardened using UV rays.
  2. Gel manicure does weaken your nail beds as the process to remove the gel is slight abrasive
  3. Gel manicure can be removed at home too, but it may be little tricky
  4. UV rays are bad for our health and gel manicure needs UV rays to harden them on our nails
  5. Gel manicure are costly too, anywhere between $35 to $100 can be spent for gel manicure
  6. Gel nail polishes include cancer causing chemicals which must be avoided.
  7. Gel manicure application may have your cuticles cut or damaged thus causing infections.
